SPOTIFY AND APPLE ARE AT EACH OTHER’S THROATS…, Apple in Talks to Acquire Jay Z’s Tidal“…, YOUTUBE’S DOMINANCE TAKES A BEATING“…, & The Music Industry Just Lost a Big Fight with the Government Over Royalties” are just a few recent Headlines glaring in the faces of EntreMusicians. And the New News is Spotify Tops 35m Subscribers which continues to support the David & Goliath mock-up we’ve been fed for decades.

Sure, there are Certain Things that Intimidate Us, Most of Us are NOT Millionaires.

But Are We Powerless?  Or Do We Merely Think We Are? Who Convinced Us of This?

Are we Really in No Position to Change this Music Game and Reroute Our Artistry Directly to Our Individual Friendbase while Bypassing The Current System?

Is the notion of An Independent Streaming Model Available to Each EntreMusician Intelligent Enough to Create Continual Content too Difficult to Imagine?

This Week I take a Break on My Lone Diatribe of the Current State of the Music Industry and that which I feel EntreMusicians Can/Should be Doing to Alter the Ugly Tide. As I Reflect & because I Am Quite Passionate, It seemed I was beginning to Sound like a Whining Polemic, which was/is not my intention.

My Goal here is to Engage, Encourage & Empower EntreMusicians Everywhere to Embrace their Artistry with the Highest Level of Significance & Inspiration.

To that End, Today I wish to share the Importance of Creating Systems in Your Day/Week/Life which Propel You toward Consistently Attaining New Heights in Your Career.

If You’re Anything Like Me, or the Millions of Other True Creatives, Our Souls Find Meaning in Abstracts. We tend to “Feel” More than We “Reason.” Creatives are More Apt to Be “In The Moment” than “In The Long Run.”

As a Intense Jazz Lover & a Participant in the Genre, the Sheer Intention of Improvisation is Always Intriguing and a Blessed Experience, but without the Foundation of a Steady Rhythm, Chord Patterns, Motifs & Melody, the Magic Mercurially Melts.

EntreMusicians Understand this Balance. We Incorporate Habits, Rituals & Systems into Our Days/Weeks/Lives to Provide Security for the Spontaneity. We Emphasize Structure so our Creativity Soars.

You Mean They Drilled Into His Vault??

Obviously I have waited for what I feel is a respectable amount of time to bring this topic up. And I No Way Feel a Disconnect from the Main Topic I have espoused for the last few months, beginning weeks prior to Prince’s Majestically Mysterious Departure.

I have been asking “How You Define Success,” “How Important Are You,” and slowly initiating an Obsessive “Psychology behind the Philosophy” Mantra for EntreMusicians to Rethink our Entire Dependence on Spotify, Pandora, Apple Music and the Upcoming Amazon Streaming System. Irregardless of the fact that the Grammys are now considering a Brand New Category for Streaming Music, If Artists are Not Getting Paid, They’re Getting Pimped! (Tweet That!)

But I Digress…

Reflecting on The Purple One’s Intense Fight for Independence from Warners, His Mysterious Death (You Mean He was Left All Alone, All Night In That Huge Complex After Almost Dying a Week Earlier?), One of the Speediest Cremations of a Body Not Dying by Fire and to Top It All, his Private Music Vault Drilled Open Less Than 10 Days After His Death?!?!!

In Considering He was a Single Man at the time of his passing, Intensely Private and that he Left No Will, One of the Single Most Important Questions EntreMusicians Must Ask themselves is “Who Is My Advocate?” It seems that Tyka and the rest of his half-siblings, along with the Well Intentioned Shelia E, Larry Graham, Morris Day and others who knew His Royal Badness Extremely Well have to Sit on the Sidelines while an Attorney & A Record Company Executive muses through his Intellectual Property.

If  This  Doesn’t  Scare  the  Rhythm  Out  of  You,  You’re  NOT  A  Musician!

Here are a Few Questions You Should Ask & Answer before the End of this Blog:

“Does My Spouse/Significant Other Know Where My Copyright-Publishing Information Is and Can They LEGALLY Speak for Me if I am Physically/Mentally Incapacitated or am Deceased?”

“Where Is My Will and Is that Sucker Updated?”

“Do Select People I Love and Trust Have the Necessary Passwords to my BMI/ASCAP/SESAC and other Pertinent Accounts”

“Have I Explained Very Clearly My Wishes for My Musical Equipment/Software?”

 “Are My Collaborative Agreements with Other Songwriters/Band Members In WRITING and In Order?”

“Are My Trustworthy Attorney & Accountant Up to Speed on My Wishes for any Unreleased Music I Might Have?”

“Have I Backed Up My Hard Drives and Entrusted them to Safe People/Places?”

Hopefully, these are Enough to Encourage You to Become Very Intentional about the Inevitable. Taking Care of Business is Always of Ultimate Importance for the Intelligent EntreMusician.

The Plan in Perspective

I have a friend named Joe (real name) who started a New Gym in Youngstown Ohio 18 Months Ago. Geographically, Joe’s Gym is about 2.8 miles away from that Other, Better Established, Open 24/7, Only $10 a Month Gym that Most Everyone Frequents. Joe’s Gym is only open from 5:30am to 9:00pm, has far less equipment & space and his Monthly Memberships begins at 5x more than that other place. Yet Joe has a startling slew of clients and continues to add Specialized Sessions & Trainers to his Growing Roster.

The Secret to Joe’s Success is Joe.His Gym Provides Intentionally Focused Workouts in an Exceptional Environment that Provides Optimum Results to its Members. Joe’s Gym is called The Train Station.

I often think of Joe as I talk to Musicians and Software Developers about this Unfolding Plan I’ve proposed. In case You are Unaware, I began a Post several weeks ago concerning EntreMusicians readdressing the Direct Sales & Digital Distribution of their Art. I continued to Add Thoughts & Emotions and will continue to discuss & work with EntreMusicians to formulate a workable plan. The Conversation is Growing!

In short, I Believe that ALL EntreMusicians must utilize their ability to Stream their Content Directly to Their Own Tribes on a Subscription Basis, without the need of a Billion Dollar Corporation paying them less than a penny per stream. The Technology is Available, but must be Personalized in a format best suited for both Artist & End User. 

Dr. Nelson Harrison, a very forward thinker and founder of The Pittsburgh Jazz Network has proposed an Alternative through Millennium Music Media which I am currently checking into and awaiting a callback from a known Artist Currently on their roster.

Joe’s Success in Starting  & Growing The Train Station is in His Initiative to Customize a Service & System the Larger Gyms simply cannot and markets his personal touch accordingly, without railing against them – and Word of Mouth is growing.

Every EntreMusician Must Go and Do Likewise. The Excuses are Over. Other Options Are Available. The Ultimate Option remains in Controlling & Distributing Our Own Songs on Our Individually Owned Platforms and Doing the Hard Work of Marketing Ourselves Appropriately. That’s The Truth of Being Independent Artists.

The Art of the Interview

Inevitably, all EntreMusicians will need to interact with Multimedia to Promote an Event or Project. I have been blessed to be able to have access to Radio, TV & Print in my region due to my involvement as a former Radio Producer for the legendary, late Dan Ryan Talk Show on WKBN’s 570AM. Although this has been decades ago, the Tips & Tricks I picked up by being on “both sides of the glass” have been invaluable in helping me spread my message. Here are a few things I have learned:

1) Have a Voice. 

Be Able to Stylize a Tone, Sense of Enunciation and a Presence that whether People are Able to See You or Not, they are Sure that You are You! I will Never Forget the Excitement that My Brother-in-Law, Phil The Beat & I felt as Teenagers when we heard our hero, Roger Troutman being interviewed on Cleveland’s Power 108, WDMT. And, he had his Talk Box with him on the Radio! This left an Indelible Impression on Us and We Could Not Wait to get his New Album and go to the show. Listening to Bootsy Collins was More Exciting than hearing Frankie Beverly interview, although Both of their Music remains as some of the Most Enduring of the Soul era.

Also, Intelligence Does Not supercede Style On the Air – if this is in line with Your Overall Imagery. Some Artists prefer to appear Downright Stupid, ala Favor Flav, because their image is what Moves the Sales. The important thing is to Know Your Voice and Always employ it while Branding Your Art.

I developed a “Radio Voice” before going to work on the Dan Ryan Show, as I was previously an On Air Gospel DJ at WGFT 1500-AM. When I am being interviewed on Radio, I often, ‘go there’ by default – but it sounds trite on Stage and on TV, so I’m more comfortable in my natural voice.

2) Possess a Look

Tape (Hard Drives) & Cameras are most unforgiving. Ditto everything I said above, but apply it to the Visual. Have Your Concept DOWN and make sure you get plenty of opinions and a consensus if you can’t afford a fashion designer. Not all Colors, Blends and Fabric are You – again, unless Your Act is Stark, Shocking or downright Disgusting. Making Absolutely Sure that You are Captivating on TV is far different than Your Stage Persona (unless you’ll be performing live on TV!) often EMs dress according to the Artisry, just keep in mind that People will be Looking a Lot Closer to You on their Big Screen, Deciphering Everything about You – a mole, crooked teeth, earrings, etc., because these features/flaws either bring Your Fans closer to you or alienate them. 

I recall how crazy I looked going on TV once to Interview with Sunglasses on. I was Naive. It Was Stupid! I think I destroyed the VHS!

3) Have Fun!

Once You’ve Established Your Voice & Your Visual, it’s time to Relax, Have Fun, Be Confident and Engage Your Artist. Too Many Musicians come off as if their Guitar Chops are as Serious & Important as the next missile strike in the Middle East. They present themselves as aloof, unapproachable with devoid of a funny bone. These decisions contain poison that both the Interviewer and their Public repel. It’s Not That Serious! Your Mission is to Make a Connection, not Create a Chasm. Even Prince learned to smile.

4) Share a Story.

Personal. Profound. Transparent. Everything is Not Perfect in Your World and No One Expects it to be. Identify Your Humanity and Relate to Others. Reveal  Mistakes that have happened on Stage or in the Studio, Your Daughter’s Favorite Artist (which is definitely not you) or why your Bass Player really needed stitches right after the show are all great topics. By All Means, Share Your Dreams. I Always Do. They Compel Others to Dream With Me!

5) Ask Questions

Yep. The forgotten Secret. Every Interviewer wants to be Involved in the Process. Some will out talk their guests. Others will be straightforward and just fire away (after all there are time restraints), but Don’t be Afraid to Trade Places. Don’t Make the Interview just about You & Yours! Expressing a Genuine care in those kind enough to give You Airtime gets You repeated visits, puts all the participants at ease and provides the Audience additional insight to the program’s host.

I frequently turn tables on Interviewers, especially when I am feeling nervous. It causes me to build some confidence when I see how others handle the unexpected question. I am able to Relax.

6) Know What You Are Talking About

There’s Nothing Worse than Radio Silence or the Proverbial Deer in the Headlights look. You Avoid these discomforts by knowing Your Art, Abilities and Industry. Keep the Dialogue Limited to What You Do Know and If You Don’t Know, Do Not Pretend. Also, Do Not Avoid the Question or Play Politician, Be Honest and Say You Don’t Know, You May Not Have Heard or are Simply Uninterested in Answering that Particular Question. And Smile.

I put my Size 10 & A 1/2 in My Mouth Twice On Radio when I Pretended to Know More about the subject matter. I tried to Play Expert in a Den of Experts and the World knew (at least that one) I Was a Fraud. I Avoided Mirrors for Two Weeks. 

7) Don’t Lie

Ever. 

This includes Exaggerations. Read My Experience Above – Again. 

If You’ve Only Sold 1000 Downloads, don’t make it 2000. How Many Accurate Unique Hits do you get per week? Be Accurate. Stay Honest. Avoid Hype.
8) Get Over Yourself

At the End of the Interview, the Conversation should not be “about” YOU, albeit concerning You, Your Projects, etc. You’ll Gain More Ground and Respect by Intentionally Making Your Airtime about Your Host, Sponsors, Fans and Most Definitely other Artists You Admire and have influenced Your Career. If there is a Ministry, Charity or Cause You Champion & Support, mention them. Always Be Charitiable & Generous in Your Positive Comments of Others.

DECEMBER 31, 2015??

Happy New Year!

Welcome to the launch of another excitingly wonderful, optimistically bright-n-shiny year! By the time you’re reading this, you’ve no doubt already broken 2 of of your 22 resolutions, but since they are left overs from last night, this digression doesn’t count!

If you’re like many of us, you’ve reviewed last year and framed an initial strategy for this one. Your calendar contains a third of this year’s important dates & deadlines and you stand ready to pencil in peripheral events which will help propel your life and career forward. Most EntreMusicians do.

What many EM’s don’t, however, is apply Dr. Stephen R. Covey’s method of “Beginning with the End in Mind” which is a more holistic approach to the Day/Week/Month methodology of navigating the year. If You were to adorn 2015 with a Single Theme, and live everyday accordingly, you would accomplish far more than merely segmenting various components to achieve your myriad of goals.

Most Importantly, placing a greater emphasis on whom you wish to be, or are becoming by year’s end, will provide a more excellent governance over your activities, than placing your “To Do List” as First Priority.

Think About It. Who Are You at the Very End of 2015? What Did You Accomplish? To Whom did You Add Value? What Work Did You do that Truly Mattered?

Appreciate The Journey

A few weeks ago it was necessary for me to transfer all of my earlier work onto new hard drives, most of which were on old 8 track cassette tapes via the (still wonderful) Tascam 688. Due to the lot of them being mislabeled and/or having more than one tune per cartridge, I needed to listen to most before hitting the ‘enter’ button.

Now I should remind you that my personality is one that is always looking forward. Being that I am not yet at the level of success I aspire to be (although truly grateful for my current blessings), I tend to push & push but very rarely reflect. So being in a situation where I was going back some 26 years began in frustration, but soon became a most revealing and rewarding experience.

Firstly, it was pleasant to observe the maturity in my writing and production skills, although I was equally amused that I could identify all the old gear I’d gone through. The DX7 patches, the Junos, the 808 beats and other sounds brought smiles and laughter. I realized that I had been a part of some very good projects and had worked with some incredible talent, many of whom have gone on to do far more than we’d imagined then and others whose choices have led them down darker paths and sadly, some who are no longer with us – but there we were, in the moment – and you can hear & feel the magic!

I surmised during this pensive process that I should not be so driven toward my future endeavors that I ignore, or devalue the experiences which have led to my current reality. I have accomplished. I have achieved. I have participated and I have made a contribution.

You have too! Perhaps you are not where you believe you can or should be. Maybe you are discouraged that you have not yet reached the goals or destination you aim toward. I encourage you – take the opportunity to pause and playback each of those moments in your life and career which have shaped and molded you to be the person, the leader, husband, wife, father, mother, sister, brother, friend, pastor, EntreMusician you are and gratefully appreciate the journey you presently travel.

If you are indeed on the right road, you’ll get there. Make the trip an exciting one!

Releasing The NEW

On Friday, November 28th at 12:01AM, the New SounDoctrine Digital Single “After All,” written by our great friend Jim Couchenour hits the servers. “After All” features the fiery Michael Austin on sax, Frank Walton on keys, bassist Dylan Waters and Mike Donadio on guitar.

As we’ve been walking through the process of final edits and mix, I thought I’d share my personal process of releasing new music, since these steps are almost second nature by now. We’re trying a few different twists this time out, so I’d like to engage you in a dialogue to learn your methods and see what’s working for you as well.

Firstly, as stated, this is a Digital Release Only. We’ve done this once before with the remix of “Smallmouth Bass” (also written by Jim and featuring Bob Baldwin on keys and Keith McKelley on sax).

I’ve been using CD Baby as an aggregate for years. They haven’t changed much since Derek Sivers left the building, but I stiil miss him. Bottom Line is I’ve never had a problem with them and they keep things simple and reasonable. I have not yet seen the need to go ‘PRO’ with them, as I already have my own P.R.O.* affiliations intact and would rather they not take any interest in repping my publishing whatsoever. Some EMs may find that feature helpful, but at present, it’s not for me.

With “After All,” I also needed to check back in with the Copyright Office as we had previously released another version back in 2009 on Jim’s “Quiet Canvas II,” there was still a need to update the SR filing** – so I took care of business.

I keep a list of terrestrial & online stations and DJs & Music Reviewers whom I maintain relationship with and I began the process of sending them the track, along with a brief note of the release date, personnel, production, copyright notices, etc. I seek a reply as to when they would be able to add the tune to their playlists. Some came back immediately while others are forthcoming. As is usually the case, some contact info has changed, so I update accordingly.

My second phase is to email all secondary multimedia with whom I have never worked with or have no relationship. I make inroads by telling them who will be playing the single (now that I have that information) and ask if they would consider doing the same.

Next will be the E-Blast to Friends of SounDoctrine who have previously purchased or enjoyed our music online. We inform them that they can download the New Song on the Release Date (Only) for a Very Special Price, just because they have supported us in the past. The SounDoctrine website, powered by Bandzoogle allows us to make such offers. The Blast will also offer include a few free downloads and additional discounts on previous SD music.

I then construct and send a Press Release to all genre specific and select entertainment media, alerting the music community that the song is available. This would be a good time to mention that we have chosen NOT to send the song to Spotify. This not only intensifies the headline, but makes a more newsworthy story to certain editors who want to further the conversation. Lastly, since we have no immediate gigs scheduled to specifically promote “After All”, (another first, as we’ve usually had a “release party”), we will provide a link to a free download for our ‘new’ friends who purchase this single – again, at our website only.

As reviews come in, we’ll update our websites and create subsequent press releases featuring them, which drives further interest as we move the music out of the music community into the mainstream. During this phase we begin networking with old and new venues to plan a series of gigs with our new show.

SounDoctrine will be release a series of digital singles in this manner to lead up to the full project “Source” in Spring of 2015.
